Days 29 to 31 : Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island est une île situé à tout juste 8 kilomètres de Townsville et surnommée la capitale australienne du Koala. Malgré son nom, cette île n'est en rien magnétique. L4histoire raconte que lors de ses expéditions australiennes, le capitaine James Cook aurait vu son compas se dérégler en passant au large de Magnetic Island. Mais l'explication la plus probable de ce phénomène est qu'en déplaçant les canons en fonte du bateau, un ouvrier de la maintenance ait lui même causé le dérèglement du compas.

Il s'agit d'une île rocailleuse et montagneuse avec un point culminant à 456m. A première vue inhospitalière, elle offre en fait une multitude de criques dont la plupart ne sont accessible qu'à pied ou en bateau.

Durant mon séjour sur Magnetic Island, j'ai eu l'occasion de faire un tour en kayak de mer vers ces baies recluses. J'ai aussi beaucoup marché : environ 15 kilomètres de sentiers de randonnées à travers l'île et qui offre des panoramas somptueux. J'ai découvert la faune locales : koalas, wallabys des rochers, lorikeet, cacatoès ; mais je n'ai malheureusement pas croisé de serpents sauvages : green tree snake (inoffensif), et death adder (venimeux et mortel).

Magnetic island is a rock island located at only 8 kilometers from Townsville. She is best known by locals as Maggie or as the Australian capital of Koalas. Apart from its name, nothing is magnetic on Magnetic island. The story tells that, while navigating along the island, captain James Cook saw his compass being unsettled. No one knows what really happened but the most plausible explanation would be that a maintenance staff, by moving the huge steel canons too close too the compass had modify the compass orientation slightly.

While staying on Magnetic Island I had the chance to go sea-kayaking along some of the many secluded bays accessible only by boat or by foot. I also walked a lot : on the 15+ kilometers of walking tracks going east to west, with breathtaking lookouts. I discovered the local fauna : rock wallabies, koalas, loorikeet, cockatoo ; but unfortunately i did not see any wild snake : neither the friendly green tree snake, nor the deadly death adder.
